Just Married: How to Fill Out Your W-4

Getting married is a big life event, and it's essential to update your tax information! A crucial step often overlooked is updating your Form W-4 with your employer. Upcloud Accounting explains why and how to do it right.
Why Update Your W-4 After Marriage?
Your W-4 tells your employer how much tax to withhold from your paychecks. Continuing to use "single" status after marriage can lead to over-withholding, meaning less money in your pocket throughout the year. Updating your W-4 ensures accurate withholding and potentially larger paychecks.
How to Fill Out Your W-4 After Marriage: A Step-by-Step Guide
Update Personal Information:
Ensure your name on the W-4 matches your Social Security card. Update your name with the SSA if needed.
File Form 8822 with the IRS to change your address if it has changed.
Determine Your Filing Status:
Will you file jointly or separately? Upcloud Accounting can help you determine the best filing status for your situation.
Account for Multiple Jobs:
If both you and your spouse work, indicate this on the W-4 to avoid over-withholding.
If you both have one job and earn roughly the same amount, check box 2(c) on both W-4s.
The higher-earning spouse should complete steps 2-4 on their W-4; the other spouse can leave those steps blank.
Use the Multiple Jobs Worksheet on page 3 if you have multiple jobs.
Claim Dependents (Child Tax Credit):
If your joint income is below $400,000 (or $200,000 if filing separately) and you have children, you likely qualify for the Child Tax Credit (CTC).
Only one spouse can claim dependents.
Multiply the number of qualifying children under 17 by $2,200.
Adjust Withholdings (Optional):
Use step 4(c) to request additional withholding if desired.
The Multiple Jobs Worksheet can help you determine the appropriate extra withholding amount.
Can You Claim Your Spouse as a Dependent?
No, you cannot claim your spouse as a dependent.
